![]() Located approximately three miles west of the city limits, the Mt. Vernon Municipal Airport is under direct city management. As a result it has experienced substantial improvements in regards to runways, taxiways and hangars. A widening and repaving of the existing runway, associated taxiways and aircraft parking aprons has been completed. New pilot controlled runway lighting is also included in the upgrade project along with future provisions for GPS navigation aids. Finally, there is a hangar space being made available for aircraft lease storage. Construction of additional hangar space is being considered as the demand warrants. Two skydiving schools, located on-field, are currently in operation. Future plans include; availability of fuel and establishment of an FBO to manage operations as airport activity increases. Today an appointed Airport Commissions exists in an advisory capacity that meets to consider items and make recommendations for review by the Board of Alderman.
The airport's close proximity to the City puts several restaurants within easy reach of pilots and their passengers for fly-in dining. The Mt. Vernon Municipal Golf Course, located on the northeast corner of town, offers a 9-hole course for those who play golf.
