The City is devoted to the economic development of Mt. Vernon through strategic and planned growth. The City works with the Chamber of Commerce and the Mt. Vernon Area Economic Development Corporation to enhance current businesses and to attract new businesses.

On February 18, 2004, The City of Mt. Vernon, the Mt. Vernon Area Economic Development Corporation and the Mt. Vernon Chamber of Commerce entered into an agreement with Jane Hood to work in the Economic Development for Mt. Vernon.  This community partnership also includes the Community Betterment Council and the Lawrence County Commission.

Jane Hood, a Miller native, comes to Mt. Vernon after retiring from the Missouri Department of Economic Development.
