began admitting residents approximately one month later. It is located at
1600 S. Hickory Street and has a capacity of 200
beds. The Home is operated by the Missouri Veterans Commission to provide
quality rehabilitative nursing care to Missouri Veterans. The Mt. Vernon
Home is one of seven veteran homes in Missouri. Other locations include St
James, Mexico, Cape Girardeau, St. Louis, Cameron and Warrensburg. These
homes are inspected annually by the Veterans Commission and The Veterans
Administration, and comply with all federal and state regulations.
MISSION STATEMENT
The mission of Missouri's Veterans Home is:
- To provide the highest level of quality skilled nursing care to
Missouri's Veterans.
- To rehabilitate to the maximum attainable level of independent
functioning by utilizing all necessary services, therapies, and to
provide a comfortable, safe, sanitary environment conducive to
personal well-being.
- To make available social and cultural activities of personal
interest designed to foster feelings of dignity and self-respect.
COST OF CARE
Actual charges for care are based upon the individual's ability to pay,
taking into consideration total income and assets. There is no fixed
charge, nor are the residents required to turn over all their assets to
the Home.
ELIGIBILITY
To be considered for residency an applicant must be: a resident
of the state of Missouri for a period of 180 days, an honorably discharged
veteran of the United States Armed Services and in need of nursing home
services. At present only veterans may be admitted. Prospective residents
may obtain an application from Social Services offices at any of the homes, at
the Missouri Veterans Commission Web Site
www.mvc.dps.mo.gov/
or from any Missouri Veterans Affairs Service Officer. Applications are
reviewed for individual needs, and placement is made according to bed
availability. Applicants are placed on a waiting list.
MISSOURI VETERANS COMMISSION: SERVING THOSE WHO
SERVED OUR COUNTRY HEALTH CARE
The Missouri Veterans Homes provide twenty-four hour skilled nursing care
under the supervision of a Medical Director. A highly skilled nursing
staff of RN's, LPN's and CNA's offer round-the-clock medical supervision
for the residents. The nursing staff participates in continuing in-service
education programs to keep the quality of care current with the most
recent medical changes. Physical, occupational, and speech therapy are
considered to be important and part of the overall plan of care.
Restorative nursing and dining programs play a large role in the
rehabilitative process.
SUPPORT SERVICES
At the Mt. Vernon facility, maintenance, dietary, therapy, pharmacy,
chaplain, and laundry services are provided by the Veteran's Home. The
Veteran's Home has agreements with area hospitals for emergency medical
services, if needed.
RESIDENT LIFE
Residents of the Missouri Veterans Home are encouraged to take an active
interest in their home, to participate in the Resident Council and
offered activities. Resident Council was established to give patients a voice
in the decisions about facility operations which affect their lives. From
this body, special committees are developed for specific projects as well
as on-going programming of activities and orientation of new residents.
Visiting veteran groups and talented groups of volunteers add immensely to
the quality of life with special programs and donations which they
provide. Individual care plans are developed towards rehabilitation using
the interdisciplinary approach.
